I have never read one of Ms. Gordon's books before and now I know why she is so popular. The characters are lovely, the stories compelling and leave one, like a sleeve of cookies, wanting more and more. In today's new world of Romance, where it seems like everything is about shock value, this set of stories is like coming home for Christmas, Embrace the love and sweetness, in a town that expects the best of of everyone, and eventually they come around. Review River's Edge Trio, Volume 2 is a collection of three related stories set in a small town (near New York City) whose motto is Kindness to Strangers.
Breaking New Ground is the story of Celia Brown, a gritty woman of eighty who stands her ground (no pun intended) against James Chandler, a housing developer who tries to take her property. The ensuing battle involves her adorable grandchild, CassidyRae, and the developer's daughter, whose acts of bravery determine the outcome. There is romance involving both young and young-at-heart that brings this delightful tale to its conclusion.
Bridging the Gap continues the story of James Chandler and his new-found love. Anna Youngblood is a beautiful native American woman whose mother is the leader of a nearby tribe who has disowned her. When James discovers that he is not invincible, the intervention of therapy dogs helps him to regain his physical and emotional health. Pet therapy becomes an instrument in the reconciliation of Anna with her people as well.
Spreading Her Wings reintroduces Sally Kirkwood, a newspaper reporter who appeared in an earlier River's Edge story. As her career expands, she and her husband Steve must face the temptation of infidelity in long-married couples. The author is in her element in this story involving the entertainment world with a focus on theatre.
Charmaine Gordon is a prolific author who pens wonderful stories about characters who reflect real people with a range of emotions that we can relate to. Her plots are deceivingly simple and deal with complex issues common to the human condition and offer hope and success to those who strive to attain it.
